Potty training was a very long process for us. It did not take three days like a book I read suggested. It was closer to one year.
We got Amelia to use the toilet before she turned two years old. Then we traveled for a bit over the next year, so we were never in the same place for longer than two weeks at a time. That turned out to be not so helpful with potty training. Then she refused to use all toilets completely, and I thought, "that's ok, she'll go when she's ready." But when her third birthday loomed near I suddenly felt pressure to get her potty trained. When we ran out of pull-ups, potty training began in earnest.
There were lots of accidents and little success. After seeing a quick blurb on how a mom tie-dyed her toddler's undies, I decided to use Amelia's long-documented love of elephants to help my cause.
I carved an elephant stamp and then we got to work. We stamped elephants on her plain white underwear using water-proof ink. After stamping, I ironed the undies to set the ink.
When she wore the undies, I reminded her to keep the elephants dry. "Don't peepee on the elephants, ok?"
For one day.
